Video Game Reviews and Industry News

Archive for March, 2009

Just found this tasty tidbit in my email box – id’s John Carmack personally programmed Wolfenstein 3d for iPhone. Just finished downloading it and I have to say I’m already impressed with the smoothness of the controls and shooting. Weighing in at under 10mb, it has all 6 original eps and decent sounds. For 60 levels (10 levels per episode), 4.99 is well worth the price. Apparently we have more than just Wolfenstien to look forward to…

Full review will come once I have had a chance to sink my teeth into the game for a while.

Pretend you’re a developer – how awesome would it be to capture the entire video game market and only have to develop your game for one system? No need to worry about the politics of exclusive releases or franchises only being for one system and potentially missing out on a huge chunk of gaming dollars. What if people could no longer buy used copies of your game and every sale was a “new” sale? What if people could no longer pirate your games?

Now, think like a consumer – how awesome would it be to have access to every game released without having to drop $1000+ (PS3: 400, 360: 300, Wii: 250, PC: 500+ all plus tax) on consoles? What if you never had to buy another? What if you never had to upgrade your PC because of games again?

Do I have your attention? Good, now what if I told you that this magical innovation could be crippled by your internet service provider (ISP)? Would you fight to make sure this doesn’t happen?

Dallas 48Hr Film Project & Updates

Posted by Tim On March - 25 - 2009

I finally got up the courage to volunteer for the Dallas 48Hr Film Project. Everyone tells me I’m so dramatic so I figure I’d prove them right or wrong! Its something I’ve always wanted to try and do so its about time I put my name in the hat. Not a lot of experience doing this kind of thing but I’m passionate about entertainment and have really been inspired by some of the short game flicks that have come out like the Half-Life 2 shorts and such.

On other news I’ve been working on about 3 articles but am waiting on a potential freelance deal to pan out to publish, lol. I’ve got two interviews that I am trying to put together on top of it as well so I’ve not been slacking (too much). You find out how tough it is to try and finish a game a week when one of those games in Fallout 3, and another is Infinite Undiscovery. Talk about a weighty combo.

Quake Live! review is coming within the next day or so. I’ve sat on it too long now and want to start getting the QuakeCon hype going again. Let me know if you’re going to be there! Also, I’m toying with the idea of going to ScrewAttack’s Gaming Convention. Its the same weekend I was supposed to go visit my grandparents but with some of the guests they’re having that I can’t talk about, its going to be epic.

Check back soon for the reviews to start up again.

Farewell Battlestar Galactica

Posted by Tim On March - 20 - 2009

Five years of programming, four seasons of shows that never stepped back from the edge, and a finale that does the series justice not only logically, but theologically and morally as well?

Absolutely amazing. Something words cannot capture and time will only make memory grow fonder happened tonight. I feel sorry for those who do not understand or appreciate the significance of the show and/or its passing.

Tonight, a giant fell among us.

Time for a second (of many) viewing!

All-Con Begins Tomorrow!! (3/13/09)

Posted by Tim On March - 12 - 2009

Packing my bags and cameras for All-Con. I’ll be volunteering most of the weekend, working the Celeb table. I’ll be with Ken Lally (Resident Evil, Heroes) and my beautiful wife will be with (the also beautiful) Candace Kita (Two and a Half Men, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry). Hottie table indeed, lol.

Saturday we’ll be doing lunch around 11:30am-1pm at Spring Creek barbeque. Any and all are welcome to join us. We go dutch, so bring money for your own food but we’ll provide the great conversation. Isn’t that just awesome?

Looking forward to an awesome weekend. Let me know you read the blog if you come by!

World of Goo shows us that you don’t need an overly complicated story or special powers or any other staple of current-gen gaming to have an extremely enjoyable experience. 2D Boy has taken a visually pleasing, simple 2-d look and technically simple game play and created a game that should be held up as an example to all of the struggling game developers out there. What is the message?

A game doesn’t have to break the bank or be a sequel to be fun.

Just FYI, folks – those going to one of the most badass game conventions of the year in the Dallas area opens registration tonight. If you want to get in on the Bring Your Own Computer (BYOC) farm, you gotta get in early, otherwise you’ll be on the dreaded waiting list. I’ll be attending – you can find me under the user name LRavenwolf. Get your hotels NOW – I’m booking mine tonight when I get home. Not at the Annatole, but down the street at the (I think) Comfort Inn - $60 per night will go quick. See you online folks!

Fallout 3: Its Amazing What You Build With Duct Tape

Posted by Tim On March - 6 - 2009

Fallout 3 – The latest entry into one of the most lauded RPG franchises for their brutal re-tellings of humanity’s attempt to survive the apocalypse. Bethesda Softworks, creators of the Elder Scroll’s chapters Morrowind and Oblivion have stepped up to take a swing at a series that many thought to be long-dead, this writer included. Having completed both Fallouts 1&2, I could easily draw many parallels between Fallout 3’s predecessors, however this is no sequel. It is as complete a re-telling as Fallout 2 was from Fallout.
How did Bethesda do? Find out after the jump Read the rest of this entry »

About Me

Yo I\'m Tim - I love playing games, writing, and giving opinions about games. Bet you probably could have guessed that, eh? I\'m currently studying towards a Game and Simulation Programming degree, hoping to finish by 2012. Its my dream to be in the game industry, doing AI or anything else, really. Meanwhile, I\'ll be here posting about the games I purchase and the games I\'m fortunate enough to be asked to review. If there\'s a game you want to see, drop me a line. Lastly, I’d like to drop a shout to those who\'ve inspired me somewhere along the way: GiantBomb.com, eat-sleep-game.com, cheapassgamer.com. These guys are some of the funniest and most interesting game podcast crews out there and I just want to say thanks for keeping us laughing.
